House in the Hills Rapid City Expansion

We're growing to serve more families

Ronald McDonald House South Dakota is building its first Ronald McDonald House in Rapid City, bringing our mission of helping families stay close to western South Dakota.

Since 1983, more than 6,400 West River families have turned to our Sioux Falls Houses in their most difficult moments. Together, they’ve stayed more than 34,000 nights. Now, families in the Black Hills will have that same support close to home.

Made possible by the generous support of Monument Health, the new House is located at 3140 Elm Avenue, at the corner of East Fairmont Blvd and Elm Avenue.

Doors are expected to open by the end of 2026.

Construction Update: We're Nearly There

Construction on the House in the Hills is nearing completion. On September 16, nurses from Monument Health got an early walkthrough.

For the nurses who care for kids every day, it was a first look at where their patients’ families will stay: private bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, laundry, and quiet spaces to rest, just blocks from the hospital.

When families come to Rapid City for medical care, they’ll be able to stay close to their child without the added stress of finding, and paying for, a place to stay.

What will the House in the Hills offer

  • A place for 600+ families per year who need to travel far from home to stay close to their sick or injured child.
  • The ability for families to stay more than 3,500 nights each year without incurring personal expenses for hotel and food.
  • 12 private guest bedrooms each, with an attached bathroom.
  • Access to a fully equipped kitchen and shared lounge spaces.
  • Guest laundry facilities including supplies at no charge.
  • Room for future expansion

Looking ahead to 2030, we expect 19 families every day will need a place to stay near their child’s care. This Ronald McDonald House is being built to meet that need.

How you can help

Thanks to our supporters, the House in the Hills is becoming a reality, but every day of construction brings new costs, and our work isn’t done yet.

We’re raising the final $500,000 to complete this initial phase of the House and have it ready for families.

Our additional $2 million stretch goal will allow us to prepare for future expansion, enhance guest amenities, and complete key architectural features.

As we get ready to open the doors on the House in the Hills, we’re building our Wish List to help stock the House with everything families will need to feel at home.

From kitchen essentials and pantry staples to bedding, laundry supplies, and comfort items for guest rooms, every item helps us welcome families the moment they walk through the door.

Take a look at our Wish List to see how you can help before we open.
